These women run their countries
Tarja Halonen
Tarja Kaarina Halonen became Finland's first female President in March 2000 and continues to hold the post.
Born in 1943, she completed her Master's in law and joined the Social Democratic Party in 1971. Three years later, then Prime Minister Kalevi Sorsa took her on as parliament secretary, introducing her to the workings of the political world. She went on to hold the titles of Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Minister of Nordic Cooperation, Minister of Justice and Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Halonen is one of Finland's most popular presidents. Her approval ratings continue to hover between 94 and 97 per cent. A lot more than George W Bush can claim.
