Quota protests erupt again

August 26, 2006
Anti-quota medicos and students struck work on Thursday and took their protest to the Supreme Court's doors, where police burst teargas shells and fired water cannons to disperse them, injuring many.

On Friday, the protestors suspended their agitation against the government's decision to introduce 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes in educational institutions, for 3 months.

A senior resident doctor said the decision came as Parliament's Monsoon Session was concluding on Friday and there was no point in carrying on with the agitation.
