Mozart meets India

August 11, 2006
For Raj this music integration is not like a melting pot but like a "salad".

He says, "In a salad everything remains the same. Cucumber is cucumber, lettuce is lettuce, salami is salami but all together, it forms a tasty, beautiful salad. Similarly, in our effort, we feel we can retain the identity of both kinds of music yet you can integrate both harmoniously. That is one of our messages.

"Technically it is fusion but it is not fusion because a purist will not find fault with either kind of music."

It took a group of musicians headed by Raj two weeks to choose six raagas that "cooperated well" with the harmony of Western music, for the album. It was a huge challenge.

They were Kaapi, Banduvarali, Bilahari, Sankarabharanam, Sindhu Bhairavi and Hamsadhwani.
