"I decided automobiles was the field I wanted to work in, firstly because the scope of the assignment is always large, both in terms of creative output and technique. A car assignment totally challenges any photographer. Technically, lighting is an integral part of the photography. More than anything else, it is my involvement in and passion for cars that drew me towards it. I am an avid driver. I love cars, and bond with them."

What is it about machines that attracts Satyajit? "My urge to drive or travel is completed by my vehicle," he says. "I experience the world only because of my vehicle. It doesn't have to be any particular vehicle. It can be a car, a bus, anything that moves..."

The urge to experience a vehicle before shooting pictures of it is very important for him. Before shooting an Ashok Leyland truck, he drove it and got a feel of the vehicle. "I feel it is good to know a vehicle before shooting it. I don't look at it as a piece of metal, nor as a mere machine; it's a personality for me, a character. Once I understand the character of the vehicle, I shoot accordingly."
