Satyajit's flirtation with the lens began in school, with an old Russian camera belonging to his father. It soon became his companion on dance tours. He performed with his parents as a professional dancer and choreographer until 1996.

"Everything about my future was set. I was to become a dancer and take over my dad's institution. There was no chance to think about doing anything else. But I felt a kind of vacuum in my life. Even while dancing, I was doing photo assignments for dancers, which gave me a high."
