The Patel home has shrunk to a quiet six from the boisterous seven it was when Dipti Patel was one of its pillars, her elder sister Vibhuti, seen here with their brother Rantik, recalls sadly. A data systems engineer at Cantor Fitzgerald -- the bond trading firm lost 657 people on 9/11 -- Dipti chose to live with her parents, Vibhuti, Rantik and Vibhuti's two sons in Long Island rather than in Manhattan.

Vibhuti, who works the night shift at New York's JFK airport, often relied on Dipti to drop the kids off at school or take them to baseball or soccer games. "My mom still thinks she is coming," says Vibhuti, "We're religious, so we know that sooner or later, we all have to go. But my mom wonders why the kids have to go before the parents."
