Sonia Gavas values the structure her new job provides, the chance to stop lying on the sofa, watching television all day. After the shock of losing her husband of nine months Ganesh Ladkat, a database administrator at Cantor Fitzgerald, Sonia -- seen here with a memento (recovered steel) from the WTC -- had to contend with visa issues that nearly forced her to move back to India. She finally won that battle.

"When I came here, with my husband, he dreamt of living here for his future," she says. "I came with that dream of supporting my husband. It's not the same -- I don't have my husband," she concedes, "but I still have that dream."
