Person Nominated : The Citizen of the Indian Republic

Reasons : I nominate the common man, as the Rediff person of the year. It has been an eventful year, with many a reputations established, and many an image tarnished. In the deafening cacaphony, the Indian citizen stands out pristine in this, the 50th year of Indian independence. The citizen has risen to the occasion like never before - be it in the form of a firebrand election commissioner, a conscientious judge of the highest court of the land, or the common man on the streets of a city once tainted by the plague. Judges, civil servants, businessmen, scientists - you name it- have had their moment in the sun. All in all, it has been the year of the Indian citizen. India, it seems, has finally arrived!
