From: Anurag.Gupta@professionals.com < guptaa@hotmail.com> Date sent: Tue, 3 Dec 1996 10:06:45 -0800 (PST) Person Nominated : T.N. Seshan Reasons : One thing our country needs desperately is the "rule of law". Increasing lawlessness in the form of corruption, criminal activities, misuse of public offices, etc. has been ruining the very foundations of our democracy. T.N. Seshan tried to curb one such malice - the electoral malpractices. He ruthlessly enforced the law as written in the statute. And he achieved good, if not spectacular, results. Seshan stood firm ground against the evil politicians, something very rare for a bureaucrat. If every public servant starts enforcing the law of the land in earnest, we can see happier times for our country in near future.

I think this is the first time that a chief election commissioner has not played into the hands of politicians. He has thrived for a clean elections and in all fairness he has acheived what he wanted. Maybe 50 seshans will make india one of the least and not the most corrupt country.
