'I believe Hollywood copied Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai'

Kidnap has been penned by Shibani Bathija, who also wrote Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Fanna. What did she bring to Kidnap?

Kidnap was Shibani's first script. We started writing Kidnap in 2002, much before Fanaa and KANK. When someone asked her if Rehaan [Aamir Khan's character in Fanaa] is this kind of a terrorist, and now she is writing a negative character for his nephew, Shabani said that there was something about disturbed and complicated men that drew her towards them.

How did you and Shibani team up?

We were at Yash Raj together. Once Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai got over, Adi and I were thinking about what to do next. I met with a lot of writers then. I met Shibani then as well. That's when she told me about Kidnap. I liked her idea and we developed it.

Is Kidnap inspired by Mel Gibson's Ransom?

No. But I believe Hollywood copied Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai a couple of months back -- Maid of Honour. Why don't you ask those people why they copied my film?

What do you think about Hollywood films being remade in Bollywood?

To each their own. As long as you make an interesting film and people watch it, what difference will it make? Subconsciously you will tend to get influenced by some films and I might have done that. Like in Dhoom 2, when Ash's character shoots Hrithik, it was my tribute to Sholay where Gabber Singh comes and shoots Thakur's entire family. The image freezes when each person gets shot. That's how I did it. It was my tribute to Sholay.
