'I am a bit selfish'

How did Vaaranam Aayiram happen?

I had told a journalist friend of mine in an interview that I would like to work with Mani Ratnam, Gowtham Menon, etc because these directors have well-etched women characters. Their heroines get to perform and not run around trees.

This journalist happened to be talking to Gowtham when he was looking for a heroine for the film. Gowtham asked him whether he had any one in mind as Deepika, who was supposed to do the role, wouldn't be doing it. This journalist then asked if I was interested? I jumped at the offer and flew down to Chennai to do the screen test. And there I was, in the film.

Generally we have heard that actresses don't like to share screen space with other actresses because they feel insecure. This film has three actresses. Do you people really feel insecure?

Firstly, I haven't done such films so far where there is more than one heroine. Yes, I did one film in Kannada with Rakshita but that role was fantastic.

When you can get a whole film, why would you want to share the space with others? That way, I am a bit selfish. But in this particular film, I have my own screen space and standing in the film. When you watch the film, you will know what I'm talking about. Yes, I am selfish as an actor and I like to be in every frame if possible. I don't like sharing space with another heroine.

Is it insecurity, or just selfishness as actor, like you said?

As an actor, I think everybody is selfish. You would like to be the highlight of the film. I don't think it is insecurity. When you are confident, you will not be insecure.

Do you feel films are a bit unfair to actresses with heroes hogging the highlight all the time? There was a time in Tamil, when K Balachander used to make films with women as the central character. There are no such directors today.

There are filmmakers today like Gowtham Menon, Rajiv Menon, etc who make films that revolve around women. I feel if heroines are ready, there are such films being made. I like to perform, and I enjoy acting. There are directors and there are roles for women. As much as I like to do films with big heroes, I like to do roles where I can perform.
