On November 3, 1956, The Wizard of Oz was broadcast on television for the first time, attracting around 45 million viewers.
It was introduced by a 10-year old called Liza Minnelli, daughter of the legendary Judy Garland. There was a rerun three years later, which attracted even larger numbers.
Keeping this in mind, CBS made it an annual tradition, showing the film on television every December from 1959 through 1962, and again from 1964 onwards.
The film was nominated for a number of Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Academy Award for Visual Effects. It lost the Oscar for Best Picture to Gone with the Wind, but won Best Song for Over The Rainbow, and Best Original Score.
Some film buffs believe The Wizard of Oz boasts the greatest soundtrack of all time.
