How the Beatles got their look

On November 9, 1961, a record store manager called Brian Epstein met The Beatles. The result -- although it took its time coming -- was Beatlemania.

Epstein visited a nightclub in Liverpool called the Cavern, after hearing much praise about four young lads creating a storm there on weeknights. Two months after catching their live act, he had become the group’s manager. More importantly, he helped them get their first record deal a year later. In September, 1962, Love Me Do became The Beatles' first Top 20 hit in the UK.

Apart from giving the band a deal, Epstein gave them something a lot more important -- the look that continues to define them. He got them to drop the jeans and jackets, and opt for suits and ties instead.

Sadly, Epstein didn't live long enough to see how The Beatles would revolutionise the face of pop music. He died of a sleeping pill overdose in 1967.
