When filmmaker Sanjay Gupta was asked why all his films were remakes, he replied, 'Because I'm not a writer.'
A classic but rare case of a filmmaker accepting his frailties. For many directors in Bollywood, it is the paucity of a good script that spells doom for their project right from the start. But there's hope in the form new-age directors -- skilled writers, who have decided to put pen to silver screen.
In the past too, we have seen visionaries like Rajinder Singh Bedi (Dastak, Phagun), Sachin Bhowmick (Raja Rani) and Sagar Sarhadi (Bazaar). More recently, we have seen KK Singh (Veergati), Suparn Varma (Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena and the upcoming Acid Factory), Girish Dhamija (Yakeen) and Ashwani Dheer (One Two Three).
In the coming months, we will see more additions to this tribe of writers-turned-directors with the debuts of Jaideep Sahni, Milap Jhaveri, Rensil D'Silva and Rumy Jafry. Of course, the man of the moment is Abbas Tyrewala, who penned hits like Main Hoon Naa, Maqbool and Munnabhai MBBS. He will make his directorial debut with Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na.
As Abbas gears up for his acid test, here's a look at the others who came before him.
