Not quite Satyajit Ray, but...

Ritwik Ghatak

Ritwik Ghatak is one of the country's most creative, imaginative and distinctive writer-director. His first effort, Bedini (1951), never saw the light of the day while Nagarik (1952) was released only a year after his death (1977).

Meanwhile, he started writing scripts -- first for Filmistan Studio and subsequently for the legendary director Bimal Roy. His scripts for Roy's Madhumati (1958) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee's directorial debut, Musafir (1957) showcased his brilliant writing abilities.

Soon enough, he was back to making films like Ajantrik (1958), Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960), Subarnarekha (1965) and Titash Ekti Nadir Naam (1973).

While Ghatak didn't get as much fame as say, Satyajit Ray, his effort, however was flawless. And his works typified his artistry, craftsmanship and a certain class. In retrospective, Ghatak's film were a tad ahead of their times.
