Intelligence, clearly. Sandler got critical raves (albeit begrudgingly) about a well etched-out character and started getting taken seriously as an actor. The film isn't a triumph by PT Anderson standards -- and remains one of Sandler's least successful films at the box office -- but it's an intriguing experiment.
