Nominee Spotlight: Paul Thomas Anderson

2007 brought the biggie, an adaptation of Upton Sinclair's novel Oil. With typically Anderson style, the film is the loosest kind of adaptation, and has emerged the critical frontrunner running up to the Oscar season.

With Daniel Day-Lewis delivering the performance of the year in the lead role as Daniel Plainview, an unscrupulous silver prospector who goes on to found an empire around the black gold.

The film is a triumph and Anderson -- who has, with this film, eschewed the PT-ness of a Barnum and declared himself Paul Thomas Anderson -- has never looked more ready for the big prize.
