Nominee Spotlight: Paul Thomas Anderson
Before he turned 30, Anderson revelled in the ultimately compelling Magnolia, a film bursting at the seams with incredible characters and great performances, and of a stupendous maturity that eventually led Paul Haggis to make its over-hyped tween version, Crash, several years later.
Set over 24 hours in Anderson's favoured Valley, the film unites three stories featuring an eclectic collective of characters, cross-cutting across each other with deft ingenuity and a staggering degree of believablity.
What a film.
