South cinema's top directors!

Selvaraghavan (Tamil)

Like Gowtham Menon, he is one of the new breed of directors who can market his films on the basis of his name.

This mechanical engineer turned filmmaker took the Tamil film industry by storm with his Kadal Kondein, making way for a style of filmmaking not seen in Tamil cinema before.

His films have passion, energy and a high emotional content. His next film 7G Rainbow Colony was a revelation both in Tamil and Telugu.

Though his last Tamil film Pudupettai was one of the most eagerly awaited films in 2006, it shocked the industry and movie watchers by the way it looked at the underworld. The film didn’t do as expected but brand Selvaraghavan survived.

His last film, Aadavari Matallukku Arthalu Verala in Telugu was entirely different from all the films he has made in Tamil so far, a soft romantic one. It was not exactly a Selvaraghavan film but it was one of the highest grossers in Telugu last year.

In one of his interviews to rediff, he had said, "Ultimately, I want to make films for a global audience." He has that raw power in him to make one.

In the picture: A still from Pudupettai.
