Things have changed quite a bit in cinema since then, and the current crop of actresses only add to the film's glamour quotient. Yet, we have had some notable female roles this year. We take a look:

Film: Thirakkadha

National award winner Priyamani came up with a sterling performance in Ranjith's Thirakkadha. Her character, Malavika, has been modelled on the life of yesteryear actress Sreevidya. She fell in love and married her co-star Ajayachandran. But soon, differences cropped up in their relationship.

When a young director Akbar Ahmed went in search of her, she was suffering from cancer and living alone in a modest hospital room.
