Chiranjeevi's Top Movies

Rudraveena (1988)

Chiranjeevi teamed up with eminent director K Balachander to produce this film under his home banner Anjana Productions.

This Balachander-Ilaiyaraja musical film depicted the ideological clash between father Bilahari Ganapathi Sastri (played by Gemini Ganesan) and Sooryam son (played by Chiranjeevi).

Sastry believed that music is for salvation; his son Sooryam wanted to use music to reform society of alcoholism. (This film was topical as that was the time of the anti-liquor movement). The social message was beautifully woven in this musical.

And though the film was devoid of Chiranjeevi ingredients like dance and fights, yet Chiru went against the grain and did it.

Predictably, Chiranjeevi stole the show with the power of his acting. Gemini Ganesan and Shobhana (her dancing skills were seen on screen) were equally solid and all provided wonderful performances.

The film, as anticipated, picked up three national awards -- namely Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration, Best Music Direction (Ilaiyaraja) and Best Male Playback Singer (S P Balasubrahmanyam) as well as Best Regional Film (Telugu).
