What does Ayan mean?
Ayan in Tamil means 'excellent', 'outstanding', and also 'Brahma'. It also has different meanings in different languages -- In Sanskrit, it means 'speed'; in biblical terms it is 'motion'; in Hebrew, it's 'peace'; in Nigeria, it's used to express the divine sound of the drum; in Turkish, it means 'important' and in Arabic, it's God's gift.
But I took the Tamil meaning for my film. I was not sure whether my producer would like a title like Ayan. After suggesting some other name for a start, I told Saravanan Sir, 'I have a different name in my mind. I don't think you will agree to it. It's Ayan.'
He wanted me to say it again. I said, Ayan. Then he asked for the meaning. When I told him the meaning, he said, 'this is the best title I have heard. We will go along with this.'
You said, you use the word for 'outstanding and excellent'. So, who is the outstanding person in the film?
The hero, of course. He somehow stands out in the film. That is why I have the byline avan.... avan mattume (he and only he). He does something in the film which makes him an outstanding personality to stand out in a crowd.
