Jean Pierre Melville's Bob le Flambeur (1956)
Melville loved American cinema. His half-dozen crime gems include The Red Circle, Le Samurai, Le Doulos and Un Flic. Un Flic has a train robbery too (like Johnny Gaddaar!).
Melville's fans include directors John Woo and Steven Soderbergh. Bob le Flambeur is again about an ageing retired ex-con and that one last job. Again, it's a film about relationships. More than plot, this film is an exquisite character study. It's leisurely paced and does not offer the thrills of The Italian Job kind of movies. Cinema is not about great stories. It's about great moments. Pure zen.
