Jules Dassin's Rififi (1954)
The perfect crime does not exist. But the perfect crime film does. And this is it.
Rififi is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Its highlight: a 30-minute robbery sequence without dialogue or music. We are watching it on DVD, but imagine sitting in the hall, where you hear nothing except four guys dexterously working on digging a hole into a jewellery shop and trying hard to be quiet. You are in the room; you become one of them.
The black and white cinematography is so good, it tempted me to shoot Johnny Gaddaar in black and white.
I will forgive anyone who doesn't watch Johnny Gaddaar, but don't dare miss this.
