'Jungle is my most memorable movie'

Moving to Darling, this is the third time Ram Gopal Varma has directed you. Does it make any difference working with someone you've known before?

Sure. The understanding between actor and director is so much more. I know exactly what he means when he says certain things. We got along really well right from our first film, and our relationship as actor and director has strengthened over the years. I understand where he's coming from in terms of his scenes and characters. He's one of those directors who gives you 100 per cent freedom to interpret things.

You've also acted in movies produced by his production company.

We've been associated for five movies. (Before Darling) there was Jungle, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, Pyar Tune Kya Kiya and Bhoot.

Which one was the most memorable?

I'd say it was Jungle and Darling. Jungle was my second film. I was working with a director that I admired very much, and it was a subject that excited me.

Darling's a very challenging role. It demanded everything I know about acting.

Is it a thriller? If it is, isn't the name a little misleading?

I can't characterise the film in any genre. It starts off as drama, and gets into suspense. It's got a lot of startling moments. It's going to scare you in certain places.

It's also very emotional. The motivation of all the characters is emotional. They're not out to scare you, but out of that comes fear. This character, which is played by Esha Deol, wants to take revenge on this guy. Out of her being sadistic almost, there is a humour, because she's enjoying this. It's fun to her, so there's a comedy element. It all stems from the passionate love affair that my character, called Aditya, was having with Esha's character.

Darling, because I keep calling her 'Darling' in the film.
