Making beautiful music together

They share a common passion and goal -- music and giving birth to revolutionary compositions taking Hindi film music to new heights.

They are partners in rhyme and creators of melody. And when the twain collaborate, it is, indeed, music to ones ears.

rediff.com takes a look at some of Bollywood's most fruitful partnerships in the realm of melody.

Shankar-Jaikishan

It rained music when Shankar Singh Raghuwanshi met Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal on their first outing together. Their work like Barsaat mein humse mile and Jiya bekarar hai for Raj Kapoor's Barsaat ensured that this extraordinary duo is here to stay. And so began a memorable innings for the tabla-loving Shankar and harmonium-friendly Jaikishan spanning several decades and innumerable hits.

The luminous quality of their music is radiated in lucid yet lilting songs like Yaad kiya dil ne (Patita), Yeh mera deewanapan (Yahudi), Sau saal pehle (Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai), Ajeeb dastan hai yeh (Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi), Tujhe jeevan ki dor se (Asli Naqli), Sayonara sayonara (Love in Tokyo), Aaj kal tere mere pyaar ke (Brahmachari).

Even so, the cream of the lot was reserved for the man who introduced them to the business. The duo doled out some of the most iconic tunes (Awaara hoon-Awaara, Pyaar hua iqraar hua-Shree 420, Aaja sanam-Chori Chori, Sab kuch seekha-Anari, Dost dost na raha-Sangam, Jeena yahan marna yahan-Mera Naam Joker) for RK, which continue to enjoy a special place in the hearts of avid music buffs.
