Navya's Saira makes it to Cannes

Let us go back a little. How did you get into films?

I a trained dancer and was always part of some ad campaigns and stage shows right from school itself. I used to get prizes including the prestigious Kala Thilakam award in the Kerala state youth festival.

The director of Ishtam Kamal, spotted me on a magazine cover and approached me for a film. I was studying in the twelfth standard in Alleppey at that time. He offered me the role in Ishtam opposite Dileep.

Then I changed my name from Dhanya to Navya. It was suggested by some family friends who were into numerology.

You are now concentrating more on Tamil and Kannada films. Why?

If you look at my career till now, you will see that I have acted in more in Malayalam films. Even now I want to work mainly in Malayalam films, I cannot adjust the dates, as I have other projects to which I am committed to.

In Malayalam, directors and producers do not consider anyone indispensable, as there are many talented people around. Still I am lucky to have worked in some memorable films in Malayalam.
