'I never met Suraiya after we broke off'

Dev Anand's life has been very rich. He has been one of India's top actors, with a flamboyant personality.

Even at 83, the actor -- rightly called evergreen -- is very active, and is on the verge of launching his autobiograhy, Romancing Life.

In the first part of an extensive interview with Dinesh Raheja, the actor spoke to his early days in Mumbai, his first job before he became an actor and his first car.

In the second and concluding part, he talks about the top stars of the time, his favourite heroines and Suraiya. Excerpts:

When was the first time you met Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, with whom you made the famous trilogy in the 1950s and 1960s?

I saw a young Raj Kapoor -- not a star then -- playing badminton when I paid Prithviraj Kapoor a visit at his Matunga residence. Prithviraj met me very warmly.

And Dilip Kumar...

While shooting for Bombay Talkies, I would catch a train from Bandra and travel to Malad. From there, I would reach the Bombay Talkies studio by tonga. Dilip Kumar would often travel in the same train; he would get down at Goregaon and head for Filmistan studios. I was friendlier to Nasir, Dilip's brother, with whom I would go swimming. I befriended Nasir at a Pali Hill bus stop; he caught my eye as he wore a stylish felt hat.

Was there considerable rivalry between Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and you?

No. All of us were accepted by the audience. There was healthy rivalry; no enmity.
