Babel
The most intriguing, troubling and mesmerising film of the year after Pan's Labryinth, it offers slightly connected stories of deprivation, loneliness, immigrant struggles and dysfunctional families set in Mexico, America, Japan and Mexico.
Though Babel has a superb and intense performance by Brad Pitt, you must remember he is part of an ensemble. There are many heart-tugging moments in the technically superb film. It may not be a film for everyone, and its most harrowing scenes are not easy to watch. But it is a terrific film about the human condition.
Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and writer Guillermo Arriaga's final entry in the trilogy that began with Amores Perros and continued with 21 Grams, similarly features multiple intercut stories, this time spread across three continents and, as its Biblical title indicates, numerous languages including Spanish and Arabic. The film, which has a grossed a decent $20 million in North America (and some $35 m abroad), could get a nice bounce if it gets major Oscar nominations.
