She has a degree in acting from Clark University, in Worcester, Massachusetts but her acting career has been uneventful. Though millions across the world watch her on television as the host of the hit show, Top Chef, it is the movies she wants to shine in. She had expected much from her work as the lip-synching disco singer Sylk in the 2001 Hollywood film Glitter, which toplined Mariah Carey.
"Part of the reason that film flopped was that it came soon after 9/11," Padma says. "But people do not know some of my early work in Italian television, especially in the Sandokan series."
She had thought Boom, which starred Amitabh and Jackie Shroff, would turn out to be a trendy Bollywood hit. But the film, in which she played a supermodel accused of stealing diamonds, was a box-office disaster.
