Varamahalakshmi festival is an auspicious day for the Kannada film industry to release films. In the past, many films that were released on this particular day have done remarkable business.
Take for example Dr Vishnuvardhan's Aaptha Mithra. Directed by P Vasu, this film released on this day in 2004 and created history by running in a theatre for 365 days continuously.
In 2005, Shivaraj Kumar's Jogi had a 100-day run in 51 centres and a silver jubilee run in more than 20.
There are exceptions, of course, one being Shivraj Kumar's highly anticipated historical Kumara Rama, which failed to get even a decent opening.
As the festival day on August 24 approaches, all those connected with the Kannada film industry are hoping for a great 2007. This time two films are releasing -- Maathaad Maathaad Mallige starring Dr Vishuvardhan, and Gandana Mane starring Shivraj Kumar.
Dr Vishnuvardhan is paired with Suhasini Mani Ratnam in Maathaad Maathaad Mallige while Shivaraj Kumar is paired with Gauri Munjal in Gandana Mane. Veteran producers K Manju and R S Gowda are behind these projects respectively.
