In five minutes, the rehearsal for the first shot started. From the front verandah three men emerged -- an elegantly dressed old man, a shabbily dressed young man and another shabbily dressed, middle-aged man.
Following them was Ashokan, the hero of Adoor's Anantharam.
The three men were asked to walk, talking to each other along the narrow path with small plants on both sides. When they were almost out of sight, Ashokan went back inside. After two rehearsals, the shot was canned in just one take.
All it took was less than 15 minutes to can such a long shot. There was no shouting 'action' and 'cut', nobody raised his voice, nor was there any 'star swagger'.
There were no chairs or umbrellas anywhere, either. Adoor walked around narrating the scenes to all the actors and when he said ready, cameraman P J Radhakrishnan quietly canned the shot. Everyone looked in awe of 'Adoor Sir'.
Completely understandable.
