By this time, quite a few villagers had assembled to see how films are shot. They looked quite surprised to see the non-filmi atmosphere and were even more disappointed to not see any stars. "I don't seem to know anyone. No Mammootty, no Mohanlal. Very sad," lamented an old lady.
"I am acting in Adoor's Sir's film after 20 long years," Ashokan told me after finishing the shot. "The first time I acted in a film of his was in a small role in Mukhamukahm. When he offered me the hero's role in Anantharam, it was like winning a Rs 50 crore lottery!
"Years have passed, and Adoor Sir has grown even bigger internationally as a director but neither he nor his style of filmmaking has changed. He never used to give a bound script or any other details about the film to any of his artistes. He just wants to us to come to the sets and perform what he asks us to," he added.
This revelation was a big surprise to me. Yes, Ashokan didn't even know the name of his character. He only knew that he is the elder son of the family, and that he has two younger sisters played by Nandita and Kavya.
