'Mallika was not my choice'

September 12, 2006
Mallika and I had minor arguments

Mallika and I have had a couple of minor arguments too, but it's all in a day's work.

I had changed the scene in which Rahul and she meet when we shot it. Originally, it was like this: Rahul, a deejay at Mallika's wedding, wants to go to the loo. But in Delhi -- where the film is set -- people are very class conscious. So Mallika's father does not let the 'bandwala' use the loo. So Rahul decides to take revenge, and relive himself on the walls of their house.

Now, Mallika wants to run away from the wedding, and she's on the balcony ready to jump. Her phone rings, falls from her hand and falls on his head. That's how they meet.

But when I was shooting, I felt that I did not want this grand Hindi film entry. I wanted it to be more natural, and didn't want him to be so vindictive. So I made it simpler.

He walks into the house, looking for the loo. She meets him and they start talking. He introduces himself to her and they shake hands. When they shake hands, he realises that her hands are trembling, and he senses her nervousness.

She says, 'Of course, I'm nervous. I'm getting married.'

He says, 'But that's okay, because you two love each other.'

And she realises that she can't marry someone she doesn't love.

Mallika preferred the first draft, and the slapstick humour of the phone falling on his head. But I convinced her that I needed that moment where she realises that love is important in a marriage.
