'Mallika was not my choice'

September 12, 2006
Being an independent director is a luxury

Filmmaking is a group activity. You have to account for your actors' vision, your producers' vision...

The producers did not ask me to change a single word from my script. And when I did change some things later, they did not object.

Rongita would comes on the sets, and help me with the styling. But she was not interfering (Saket is seen, above, directing his stars). I've worked in television before and I'm used to sitting in meetings convincing channel heads and executives. To me, this interference is very minor to what happens there.

But I don't know any first-time directors who haven't faced this. I know how Yash Raj, Mukta Arts, Vidhu Vinod Chopra works. I have friends of work there. You have to convince people everywhere. Being an independent director is a luxury.
