The many masks of Boman Irani

October 5, 2006
In Khosla Ka Ghosla, Boman plays Khurana, a sly, crass, flamboyant, pot-bellied conman, who makes his millions by acquiring property illegally. Boman tells us how he found fodder for his role. "These guys (brokers) exist, or it could be 20 of them rolled into one. However, I like my characters to be specific. I don't like to generalise and say, this is how I like Punjabis to be perceived, without research. It is important to go out there to see where the fiction originates. You have to find these people, spend time with them and enjoy that experience because it is far more rewarding than the 20 seconds in front of a camera."

"I went to (Mumbai's) Sion Koliwada, had a beer and some (popular snack) Prawn Koliwada. We went to real estate people, got tapes, recordings, etc. The joy of being an actor is being someone you are not. There is a pleasure in that. It is your job to discover what runs in people's minds and how they think. Everyone has a dark side and a cruel side. I am not as refined when sitting with buddies having a beer. And though I am not like Khurana, there is that potential in all of us."

"Anupam Kher and I hit it off. We are rivals (in the film). The minute you start respecting each other and find what's interesting in the other person, you take it to another level. If you aren't interesting, I don't think you can be a good actor. You may know everything about acting, but you may not be watchable. Your eyes must think; vacuous eyes don't work. The minute you are thinking, your eyes are thinking. And the light gets caught in the eyes."
