The many masks of Boman Irani
October 5, 2006
In Darna Mana Hai, a horror film comprising six plots, Boman plays the psychotic owner-housekeeper-manager of a highway inn. He is a serial killer while Saif Ali Khan is a photographer who checks in. How did he get into that sinister character? "It's simple. I thought about it and discussed it with Ramu (Ram Gopal Varma, the producer). Not all killers have to be frightening. It is when they are timid that they are more dangerous. If they mean well and think that what they are doing is right, it is even more dangerous."
The innkeeper forbids his guests from smoking, and kills them when they refuse. "He thinks that, if smoking kills, he might as well save a person by curing him of the habit. So, there's a great sub-text to the whole thing. He is diseased himself."
The actor appears to have enjoyed working with Saif (left). "It was wonderful. It didn't take us too much time to get together and discuss things. But my belief is, the less you talk about the role and the more you talk about life with your actors, the better you understand each other. You have to understand the person playing the role; then, you automatically understand the role he is playing. For me, the greatest performances come when two actors seem to respect and like each other."
