The many masks of Boman Irani
October 5, 2006
In Being Cyrus, a suspenseful psychological thriller, Boman plays a character from his own community, Farookh Sethna -- a crude, ill-mannered, hot-tempered Parsi and a bully whose wife (played by Simone Singh) is constantly at the receiving end.
Is it easier to play someone from one's community? "It's more difficult," says Boman, "because I am not like Farookh Sethna, just as I am not like Lucky Singh. Maybe I am more like Lucky than Farookh, because his instincts as a father are closer to me. Farookh has a different body language and accent, but that has never made up for great acting. Great acting is how you, the actor, think while delivering a line."
"It is not really difficult to play someone from a community in a stereotypical way. You just need to be specific. For instance, I don't know any Farookh Sethnas in the Parsi community. Maybe there isn't one. But, if there was a Parsi who was boorish, loud and crude, he would be like Sethna. I have never met one like that though, have you?"
