Filmi Awards with a Desperate Housewife

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to jazz-singer Asha Puthli, one of the most overwhelmed winners. She recalled how she had left India at age 20 for America, about four decades ago, seeking a career in a different kind of musical genre, and was touched that she was getting an honour from her own people.
Puthli is more popular in Europe than in America, but has received very good press in the US as well. "Nobody has combined disco, jazz, rock influences from gospel music and India, introspective lyrics, funk rhythms, and massed voices before," The New York Times said of her work.
