Kallarali Hoovaagi, based on a novel of the same name by B L Venu, is a fairytale romance. The story is set in the Chitradurga province in the 18th century, in the turmoil two rulers undergo because of a love affair between a Hindu warrior and his Muslim lover. The two rulers are Hyder Ali, ruler of Old Mysore province, and chieftain Madakarinayaka.
Madakarinayaka is regarded as a brave warrior who fought and resisted Hyder Ali’s invasion, besides trying to maintain unity in his province. He is a more popular historical figure than Kumara Rama who was also a chieftain of a small province called Kummatadurga.
Despite the failure of a magnum opus like Kumara Rama, a lot is expected from Kallarali Hoovagi mainly because the filmmaker is an award-winning director like Nagabharana. His earlier period film Nagamandala, featuring Prakash Raj, was a big hit. Nagabharana has won several National and state awards. One of the most successful films made by him is Banker Margayya which was based on the novel Financial Expert written by R K Narayan
