Casting coups in Bollywood
Andaz Apna Apna, 1995
After Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak released in 1988, Aamir Khan became an instant sensation.
Soon, he had competition. Salman Khan burst onto the scene the very next year with Maine Pyar Kiya. Aamir's films after QSQT were not big draws at the box office, and people started wondering if he was a one-hit wonder, till Dil (1990) and Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991) did wonders at the BO.
Raj Kumar Santoshi, who had made intense films like Ghayal, convinced Aamir and Salman to star in Andaz Apna Apna, an out and out comedy.
There were expected reports of ego clashes between the two Khans, and of one-upmanship.
Bollywood pundits wondered if the film would ever be completed, but it was.
It did not do well in theatres, and the movie's true star turn was Paresh Rawal, who played the villain Teja.
Still, it has become a cult flick since. And Aamir, who reportedly vowed never to work with Salman again, is once again buddy-buddy with the controversial star.
