When the Best Director didn't make the Best Film

It was the talk of the town, winning virtually every award leading up to the Oscars. Nothing could dislodge the cowboys from the top prize, but then it became too big -- and too predictable -- a choice. Also, homosexuality is a word not mentioned too loudly in the Academy's hallways. Brokeback became this year's Sideways, and the Oscars needed a twist.

So even as Ang Lee won Best Director and bookies grinned knowing smiles around the world, the last-ditch surprise was a biggie, making presenter Jack Nicholson exclaim 'wow' before announcing Crash. Director Paul Haggis was as shocked as the rest of us.
