The Academy went for both, hailing Rob Marshall's musical -- a Broadway remake is always a good idea -- and generating great publicity as Polanski, a fugitive from US justice since fleeing the country in 1978, was not present at the ceremony. Presenter Harrison Ford accepted the award on his behalf.
