Gladiator is the kind of film Oscar juries love: Epic, sweeping, larger than life, and as mainstream as they get.

On the other hand, British director Ridley Scott wasn't edgy enough that year, especially with Soderbergh generating cult buzz for his gritty, superbly-reviewed film.
