Tamil Cinema: The year so far
July 17, 2006
It hasn't been a bad year for Tamil films so far, but not a great one
either. There have been no super hits like Chandramukhi, for one. The
heartening thing is many small films have worked at the box office, although
not all have been path breaking. 2006 has, to date, given us six months of
gangster films.
The one that was the most talked about was Selvaraghvan's Pudupettai. No
other film in 2006 had such a bumper opening, and it was not fans of Dhanush
who made this possible, but fans of director Selvaraghavan. Still, the film
is not as huge a hit as his earlier Kadal Kondein or 7 G Rainbow Colony.
The biggest compliment Pudupettai got was from Cameron Bailey, Film Programmer for the Toronto Film Festival. He showered it with praise, although most residents of Tamil Nadu felt it had an overdose of blood and violence.
