Omkara
Vishal Bharadwaj's passion and vision shows in every frame of this masterful adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello. Whether be it the stirring score or the carefully painted shots, Omkara constantly reminds you of Bharadwaj's impressive filmmaking talent. Even his dialogues capture the true essence of the play, by using linguistic references to animals such as dogs and snakes. Shakespeare used such language to show the animalistic side of human beings, and Bharadwaj creates a similar effect by making us wonder about the dark side hidden in each character.
Iago is famously the strongest character in the play, and Saif Ali Khan does not disappoint with his skillful performance. He delivers a soliloquoy to the audience... through his eyes. There is a fabulous attention to detail in his get-up, whether be it his limp, his stained teeth or the long painted fingernails. Despite a rather disappointing climax and the questionable casting of Ajay Devgan (he fails to show the open vulnerability of Othello), Omkara is a very fine film boosted with other strong performances from Kareena Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma and Deepak Dobriyal.
