Rediff Reviewer's Top Five in 2006

Dor

I had approached this one with trepidation. Nagesh Kukunoor is a talented director in his own right, but I found the previews and trailors unappealing. And while I have enjoyed watching some of his films in the past, I've never revisited them, at least in part because Kukunoor is a director who lacks the visual sense of cinema, concentrating more on dialogues for character development.

But Dor is actually a film that takes a journey into the side of India that is rarely shown in most of today's Hindi cinema. Along with the journey from Himachal to Rajasthan is the journey of a friendship bond between two girls, Zeenat (Gul Panag) and Meera (Ayesha Takia). The story has many layers to it: it is a love story, it is a story about widow rights and it is a story about being able to come to terms with bereavement.

Kukunoor never forgets to add a bit of humour through the character of Behroopiya (Shreyas Talpade) or through memorable sequences such as Meera secretly dancing to You Are My Soniya. Both the leading ladies act very well, but it is Takia who surprises us with a quiet and commanding performance. There is clearly more to her than just a bimbo role in Shaadi Se Pehle.
