Kamli: A film dedicated to the girl child

August 14, 2006
She says she heard of K N T Sastry and his film Tiladanam through Aruna Vasudev. "I also saw the documentary he had made on this issue of 'harvesting' baby girls." Regarding her preparation for the role, she says, "I read material on it. I don't intellectualise it. I just imagine what I would do if I was in Kamli's situation. There is spontaneity and I go with my instinct."

Sastry says this film is dedicated to all the girl children of the world. "After I made the documentary Harvesting Baby Girls (televised on Doordarshan in 2003), I began toying with the idea of making a feature film on the subject. Soundarya (the late actor who died in a helicopter crash in April 2004 during the Lok Sabha elections) was interested in producing it. She asked me to narrate stories and I told her a few ideas. She was not keen on them but, when I told her this one, she was very interested.

"We are shooting Kamli despite innumerable difficulties. We have ensured the ethnicity and reality of the film. It is a realistic take on the issue with just a bit of imagination towards the end. I chose Nandita and Shafi as they were exposed to world of theatre and cinema."
