Kamli: A film dedicated to the girl child
August 14, 2006
Shafi (an NSD graduate who has done commercial cinema) says, "The film is close to human life -- the characters are real and visible. I am happy to play a role. In order to prepare for it, I went to a thanda (a lambada settlement) near Ibrahimpatnam and was shocked to see that, despite almost 60 years of independence, the conditions of poverty still prevail."
Cut to another scene -- Nandita goes to a kirana shop and hands over her bag and bottle to the vendor, who tries to misbehave with her. She takes the bottle and bag firmly and starts to walk.
There is a break in shooting and we pick up the threads of our conversation. "I don't see films on the basis of language," says Nandita. "I do films because of stories. Why should one restrict oneself to only Hindi? There is talent in other places too."
