The man who makes Rani glow

August 10, 2006
In Chalte Chalte, I tried very dark eyes on Rani for the first time. I've done that look for Aishwarya Rai and even Kajol before (in the song Suraj Hua Madhyam in K3G). It was noticed on Rani because I kept her look consistent throughout the film. If you are consistent, people notice it.

This was a landmark look for Rani. She continued it with other make-up artistes too, but it's time for her to change, because it can get repetitive and boring after a point.

I don't think Chalte Chalte is my best work on her though. For me, her look in the K3G song Shava Shava was very good. There's also a jogging sequence with Rani and Shah Rukh Khan where she looks very good because she looked fresh, with little make-up. I tend to like the freshly scrubbed look. You should put all the make-up you want to but, at the end of it, the heroine should look like she’s not wearing any. That, for me, is a victory.

My best work so far has been with Ash in bits of Taal and Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, Rani in K3G, and Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Bekhudi. Actresses like Kajol and Tabu hate make-up. If I know that someone doesn't like too much make-up, I try and cut it down. It's the make-up artiste's job to make sure that, when the heroine leaves for a shoot, she is comfortable in her look.
